On the flip-side; however, there are many “health” tips floating around the internet that are not exactly accurate. For instance, being pregnant doesn’t mean that you have to give up cheese and lunch meats for the next nine months.

#1 – Take Your Prenatal Vitamin
Now, I know this may seem pretty “well, duh?” to most of you, but taking your prenatal vitamin every day is vital to ensuring that baby comes out as healthy as possible and you feel your best during the process.

The prenatal vitamin was designed to help boost those extra nutrients that your body makes during the pregnancy process. You are, after all, creating a baby from scratch, so it’s no wonder that your body is hungry for those nutrients.
Folic acid, calcium, and iron are just a few of the many nutrients your body needs to help keep you and baby healthy. Prenatal vitamins are normally prescribed to you by your obstetrician at your first appointment or even before that if you have a couple more weeks to wait before they are ready to see you.
However, you can also purchase prenatal vitamins over the counter at retailers such as Walgreens, Target, and Walmart if you prefer something along the chewable or gummy variety. With morning sickness at its worst in the first trimester, sometimes swallowing a pill isn’t always an option—and that’s okay!
#2 – Watching What You Do Around the House
Even though you may still be feeling great and full of energy in your first and even second trimester, it is important that you modify your daily chore routine. You are going to want to be careful not to lift anything too heavy.
It is recommended that you refrain from lifting anything that is over twenty pounds in weight. You should also avoid climbing on ladders and step ladders. As your body changes and your center of balance shifts, you are more prone to falls.
Aside from physical restrictions, there are other things that you should try to avoid around the house. One of the big ones is avoiding cleaning the litter box until baby comes. Toxoplasmosis is a disease that can be passed on to humans via parasites in cat urine and feces.
For regular adults, toxoplasmosis produces mild flu-like symptoms and is easily treatable. However, in unborn babies, toxoplasmosis can cause birth defects and even death.
Pregnant women should also try to avoid inhaling cleaning chemicals when cleaning the house. In addition to this, trying to avoid inhaling other chemicals such as interior wall paint and hair dye. If you are going to paint, try to keep a window open and wear a face mask; and, if you are going to dye your own hair, make sure you do so in a well-ventilated area.
#3 – Cut Out Alcohol
One of the most important first time pregnancy tips is to stop consuming alcohol. Whatever your body is exposed to also goes straight to the baby and that unfortunately includes often addictive substances such as alcohol. When drinking alcohol, small amounts pass on through your body, through the placenta, and to the baby.
Unfortunately, the baby’s body is not yet properly equipped to filter out alcohol, which then causes the chemical to remain in baby’s body for much longer than it would yours.
This causes a slowing of baby’s development and is the one and only cause of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, a mental/emotional disability that can affect your child for the rest of their life.
If you feel like you must drink; however, try to limit your consumption to one drink a day. While this can still be harmful to baby’s development, it is far less likely that baby will develop fetal alcohol syndrome, although it is always a risk. Babies are also more impacted by alcohol consumption during the first trimester, so alcohol should be eliminated completely during the first three months.
#4 – Keep Up on Your Dentist Appointments and Brush Daily

Not only are these issues just an addition to the overall discomfort of pregnancy, but they are also completely preventable. Women who are pregnant should make sure to brush at least twice a day and a little mouthwash wouldn’t hurt either.
It is also perfectly okay to keep your scheduled appointment with your dentist for cleanings and any other procedures that they recommend. As long as you tell your dentist that you are pregnant, you will be perfectly fine.
If you suspect that you have a cavity or anything else of that nature, make sure that you contact your dentist immediately. An infection of any kind can potentially be harmful to baby if gone too long without proper treatment.
#5 – Make Sure to Eat A Little Something Extra for Baby
Another important first time pregnancy tips is to eat more for your baby. This is probably a tip you like to hear!
It is recommended that pregnant women consume around 500 extra calories a day to help support your child. This means that if your craving that piece of chocolate cake, go ahead and indulge yourself. It is suspected by doctors that pregnancy cravings may actually be hints toward a certain nutrient that your body needs more of.
As long as you are not overindulging yourself or eating way more than you used to you’ll be fine. Enjoy the extra calories while you can!

It is important not to do anything too strenuous during pregnancy; however, it is also not wise to sit around on your fanny doing nothing more than catching up on some reruns of Friends. Low-impact exercises are perfect for those moms-to-be out there who are looking to stay active during their pregnancy.
Exercises such as walking, cycling, or swimming are perfect for pregnant women. Its great for your body physically. Exercising during pregnancy can also alleviate some stress and anxiety.
#7 – Take a Pregnancy Class
Another healthy first time pregnancy tips is to get signed up for pregnancy classes. They are a great way to provide new moms with some peace of mind while preparing for baby’s arrival. Pregnancy classes will properly prepare you for childbirth. They are also designed to help equip women with tools to stay calm and handle birth with ease.
Often times tours of your chosen birthing facility are offered. This will help in giving you a bit more peace of mind. Pregnancy classes are designed to give moms the extra boost of confidence to have a happy and healthy birth.
